Do you have a specific question on skype groups? I use skype groups and for me it is one of the best was to keep in contact with colleagues as well as to disseminate info on current projects for immediate feedback.

Yes the business cards idea is powerful because know one keeps business cards anymore. Just copy the info on a spreadsheet upload them to your networks then toss the cards. Pretty soon their won't be a need for business cards anymore everyone will be using electronic business cards sent from mobile devices.

Meetu people will take action if you are sincerely referring them someone that will be providing value to their network. For instance..I know that you are into web development so isn't safe to say that you would like to meet people that are either directly or indirectly in the same field.
Or a good referral for you could be someone looking for great web developer like yourself.
